Best Coffeeshops in Bismarck North Dakota

coffee being made in a pourer

When I first moved to Bismarck one of the first places I sought was a good coffee shop. Sure, I can do the drive thru at Starbucks but when I am looking for a place to sit for awhile or meet with friends I usually want a place that has reliably great tasting coffee, an assortment of treats, a nice ambiance and lots of seating.  I was so pleased to find a number of excellent coffeeshops in the area. Here are my favorites (so far) in the Bismarck Mandan area.

Dunn Bros Coffee - North Bismarck

1401 Skyline Boulevard, Bismarck ND 58503

After living in Minneapolis for 20 years I knew I could count on great tasting coffee and the Bismarck location consistently delivers amazing taste. They also have comfortable seats, with cushions and your pick of high or low tables. Another nice feature is the small conference room which can be reserved at no extra cost. They also offer an assortment of food items for both breakfast and lunch. The ambiance is nice too. Windows on two sides, a fireplace for chilly months and a patio for summer too. Dunn Bros is a franchise but it is locally owned.

Anima Cucina - Central / Downtown Bismarck

101 North 5th Street, Bismarck ND 58501

I am becoming a regular at this downtown favorite. It reminds me of my favorite neighborhood big city cafe in Minneapolis.  they serve Red Dog Coffee which has amazing flavor and they also serve wine, desserts, charcuterie and other food items. I’ve heard the tea is amazing as well. The interior offers choices of table seating by the windows or high backed booths for some privacy or conversation. The only downfall is there is no outdoor seating and the 90 minute limit on downtown parking.

12 Stones Coffee Co. - South Bismarck

1320 Tacoma Ave, Unit A, Bismarck, ND 58504

On the south side this coffeeshop is your best bet. Great tasting coffee, friendly service, and lots of windows. They also offer a small conference room which can be reserved. You have a choice of tables or a couch seating. They have great baked goods from Brick Oven Bakery but they can disappear quickly.  The chairs are not very conformable but the beautiful windows and nice ambiance keeps you there even though your bum might start to hurt. There is lots of parking, however, as this coffeeshop is leased in part of a church, making it very popular at times. A portion of overall profits will go to both local and global ministries and charities.

Balancing Goat Coffee Co. - North Mandan

2705 Sunset Drive N, Mandan ND 58554

My sister dragged me here one day and I am so glad she did. Amazing food, ambiance and of course great tasting coffee. Not as much natural light as some of the other shops listed here but the interior is inviting and I really enjoyed looking through their gifty and health care items they offer for sale.

Cappuccino On Collins - Downtown Mandan

https://cappuccinooncollins.com

105 Collins Ave, Mandan, ND 58554

This place reminds me of my favorite coffeeshop in the NE arts district of Minneapolis and lower town St Paul. The decor is eclectic and bright which suites it’s location in a historic building in downtown Mandan. The atmosphere is cozy, and the coffee tasted good. No drive thru but there is plenty of street parking out front. It’s smaller than the others listed here but the customer service was nice and it is the perfect place to stop if you are in Mandan.

Joyhouse Coffee - North Bismarck

3225 N 14th St, Bismarck, ND 58503

It seems everyone is discovering this great coffee shop on the Northside. It’s located in the lobby of a church with high ceilings and lots of open space. The coffee is fantastic and they offer lots of interesting seating options. The table seating was not the most comfortable but there are also a number of couches for a more cozy feel. My girlfriends rave about the crepes that are served along with a nice assortment of other treats. The only downside is the noise level is rather loud as it’s in a somewhat echo-y church lobby.

Have no fear, if you are relocating to Bismarck you will have lots of choices for a great coffee and hangout place. If you are traveling thru central North Dakota, I hope you have time to visit more than one of these local java stars.
